Drive time is 1 hour from the airport to the lodge.
Arusha Serena Hotel, Resort & Spa is set among the woodland slopes of Mount Meru at the edge of Lake Duluti. Originally a colonial era coffee farm, today the hotel offers 42 cottage-style guest rooms. The ambience here is warmly reminiscent of the property's history, beginning with the welcoming stone-built reception area and extending to cottage-style rooms neatly arranged among landscaped lawns and the colorful banks of bougainvillea. Elegant, country-manor interiors feature unique artifacts, leaded windows and French doors opening to extensive lake view gardens. Social areas include a library, a lounge, and a restaurant with a wood fireplace and lake and garden views.
After an early breakfast around 7:00 a.m. at the lodge, depart for Arusha National Park, at the foot of Mount Meru. Here, you will meet your local safari ranger for a walking safari.
You’ll be walking alongside wild animals in their natural habitat, including giraffes, zebras, warthogs, and possibly the elusive colobus monkey. Plus, visit an impressive waterfall that hides in the heart of the park.
Enjoy lunch overlooking the park before returning to the lodge to relax and freshen up.
Drive time is around 30 minutes to Arusha National Park from the lodge.
After a relaxing afternoon, meet up with our group for a Welcome to Tanzania celebration featuring traditional dance entertainment, live music, and exciting acrobatics.
Dinner will follow the performance.
Not only is Arusha the gateway to the famous northern safari circuit in Tanzania but it boasts a very underrated national park on its doorstep alongside the slopes of Mt Meru and further away, Mt Kilimanjaro. Arusha National Park covers large tracts of Mt Meru and although small at just 544 square kms, it boasts a wide variety of landscapes and indeed wildlife.
The Ngurdoto Crater is somewhat swampy and a good place to see buffaloes, and past the Ngurdoto forest there is a grassland area called Little Serengeti where zebras can be seen. The series of seven shallow alkaline lakes on the north eastern side attract all manner of wading birds and even flamingoes. There is a good population of giraffe, waterbuck, buffaloes, warthogs, zebra, and even the occasional leopard can be found.
Following breakfast, depart from Arusha for Tarangire National Park. Enjoy game viewing en route to your lodge, followed by a hot lunch upon arrival.
Continue with game drives in the afternoon.
Dinner will be upon return to the lodge.
Nestled in the heart of the breathtaking Tarangire National Park, Elephant Rock Luxury Camp Tarangire is a boutique property with sixteen luxurious safari tents. The camp is located close to Boundary Hill with spectacular views of Tarangire National Park.
Tarangire National Park covers an undulating area of 2,850 km2 (1,100 mi2) and is an easy few hours drive from Arusha. Famous for its giant baobabs, savannahs with scattered termite mounds, and large elephant herds, this underrated park is dominated by the perennial Tarangire River.
In the middle of the park, the Silale swamp becomes the main source of water and attracts elephants and predators as the season gets drier and drier. There is a healthy lion population and the other predators are often spotted trailing the plains game as they head to water, or occasionally the cats can be spotted lounging in sausage trees.
After breakfast, continue exploring the Silale Swamps in Tarangire National Park, an area renowned for its abundant wildlife and birdlife.
Return to camp for lunch before heading out on another afternoon safari game drive.
Dinner will be served at the lodge.
After breakfast, enjoy an early morning game drive in Tarangire National Park before departing for the town of Karatu.
Travel to Mto wa Mbu for a guided cultural village tour and lunch with local flavours.
Following lunch, enjoy a tanzanite shopping experience at Safariland before continuing to the town of Karatu.
Karatu for a coffee tour.
Karatu is a ‘gateway’ town within easy reach of the iconic Ngorongoro Crater as well as the Lake Manyara National Park. Because of the volcanic soil the area is superb for agriculture, and as well as subsistence and commercial farmers there are a multitude of working coffee farms.
Later, enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and travel to the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge overlooking the breathtaking crater rim.
Check-in for your stay, and enjoy dinner here.
Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania, seamlessly built into the landscape with river stone and indigenous vines, creating a property that blends naturally into its surroundings while offering uninterrupted views of the crater. The lodge features 74 rooms, all arranged along the crater edge with private stone balconies. At its core is a central lodge with arched stone walkways, timbered decks, and a constant fireplace, while dining is centered around the main restaurant, serving local and international cuisine in a traditionally inspired setting with panoramic terrace views. Additional amenities include a bar and lounge areas, Maisha Spa wellness treatments, and evening entertainment, creating a well-rounded and immersive stay experience.
After an early breakfast, descend into the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater for a full day of wildlife viewing.
Enjoy a picnic lunch beside the hippo pool before continuing game drives in the afternoon.
Return to the lodge for a relaxing evening and dinner.
A veritable Garden of Eden, the Ngorongoro Crater is only 260 km2 (100mi2) in size yet has some of the highest densities of lion and spotted hyena found anywhere in the world. The view from the crater rim at 2,000 feet above the floor is nothing short of breathtaking. The thick mountain forests of the crater highlands strike a sharp contrast with the short grass plains of the crater floor with its yellow fever Acacia woodlands and streams. The soda lake Magadi in the center of the crater floor sometimes attracts lesser flamingos, and the area is known for very large tusked elephants, black rhino, and great predator action. Easily accessible from Arusha, the three million year old Ngorongoro Crater was once a gigantic volcano that some suggest was even higher than Mt Kilimanjaro. It is the largest intact caldera in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
After breakfast visit a traditional Maasai village en route to the Serengeti National Park.
Upon arrival at the Ndutu Safari Lodge, enjoy lunch and a bit of relaxation.
Spend the afternoon and evening on safari game drives.
In January, the great migration brings massive herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelle to the Southern Serengeti near Ndutu. It is calving season for the wildebeest. Many predators and scavengers closely follow the migrating herds, making it a spectacular opportunity to continue to spot big cats.
Enjoy dinner at the lodge.
Ndutu Safari Lodge is the oldest lodge in Tanzania and is situated in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the southern Serengeti ecosystem. The lodge nestles unobtrusively under a canopy of giant acacias looking towards a soda lake, Lake Ndutu. Steeped in history and famous for its homely warmth and generous hospitality, Ndutu offers peace, tranquility, and exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year. The Lodge comprises thirty-four comfortable stone and thatched en-suite cottages beside relaxed, dining, sitting, and bar areas, along with a separate fitness and treatment room. The lodge offers a superb base from which to explore the range of habitats that lie within easy reach. This include swamps, woodlands, soda lakes, and the world famous Serengeti short grass plains.
After breakfast at the Ndutu Safari Lodge, you'll continue safari game drives in the Southern Serengeti.
You'll be astounded by the sheer number of animals in this area. Over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born here annually, attracting high concentrations for predators like lions and cheetahs.
Return to the lodge for dinner.
The vast open plains of the southern Serengeti offer insight into why Serengeti was so named, being derived from the Maasai word for the endless plains. To the east the plains stretch out to the picturesque Gol kopjes, imposing ancient granite outcrops that are islands of biodiversity and provide refuge from the open plains for all the cats. The Maasai steppe in the east is home to huge clans of spotted hyena who are probably the apex predator in this area. This UNESCO World Heritage site covers 14,750 km2 (5,700 mi2) of premiere game viewing in Acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and undulating savannahs interspersed with seasonal rivers.
Enjoy an early morning game drive in Ndutu before returning to camp for a hot lunch.
Transfer to the Central Serengeti, continuing your wildlife safari in search of the Serengeti’s renowned big cats.
Check in at the Narudi Tented Camp and enjoy dinner here.
North of the southern grasslands lies the central part of the Serengeti, a beautiful area with wide open plains as far as the eye can see, dotted with small granite kopjes and seasonal rivers. The area is full of resident game and one of the highest densities of cats, especially lions, to be found anywhere in Africa. In December through February, the world famous Great Wildebeest Migration can be found here, with over two million animals, including zebras and gazelles, making their annual pilgrimage in search of standing water and nutritious grass. This UNESCO World Heritage site covers 14,750 km2 (5,700 mi2) of premiere game viewing in Acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and undulating savannahs interspersed with seasonal rivers.
Your choice whether you want to enjoy a relaxing morning at camp, or join the adventure with an early morning hot air balloon ride and see the great migration from above. The balloon safari is an optional add-on.
Later in the day, you'll continue exploring the Central Serengeti. Our experienced safari guides will work to track any animals we haven't spotted yet as our safari is soon coming to a close.
Dinner will be served at camp.
